Let's Get Out and Drive Today

Let's get out and drive todayMy 16 year old daughter, Stephanie is learning to drive. She has taken her time with it.  She could already have her driver's license at her age, but she hasn't been in a hurry. She said that she hasn't really wanted to get out on the roads.  I can't really blame her - the roads here are really crowded and sometimes a bit crazy.

When I was a 15 year old kid all I wanted to do was get behind the wheel.  But, it was different back then.  The roads were empty. Melbourne Florida was a small, quiet town. My dad was insistent that I learn to drive on a stick shift, because so many cars were stick back then.  He also made me change a couple of tires before I ever got behind the wheel.  He made me change the oil, too.  He said that I wasn't going to drive a car without knowing how to take care of it first.

I learned to drive on an old light blue VW square back. It had over 150,000 miles on it at the time.  I remember coming around the corner in an intersection here in town, and pushing the clutch in, and the clutch rod snapped - in half.  The car came to a slow stop - in the middle of the intersection. At the time I was terrified! My dad and I got out and pushed it to a nearby parking lot.  That was the first of a long line of cars that I had to push for one reason or another in my life.

The day I turned 16 years old, I was at the driver's license office, taking my test.  I was driving the next day.

Today, around here, that seems to have changed.  Teenagers are taking a bit longer to learn to drive...an extra year or two.  Stephanie tells me that she is not comfortable driving my Mini Van because it's only 2 years old. Stephanie has just inherited her Grandma's car, which is smaller and older than my vehicle.  She seems to be fine with it. She is now asking to drive everyday. I'll let you know when she decides it's time to head to the Department of Motor Vehicles to get her driver license.

Brevard County Foreclosure Filings Are Down

Foreclosure filings are down

Statistics indicate that Brevard County Florida foreclosure numbers dropped for February 2009, compared to previous months. The Clerk of Courts office indicated there were 807 filings.  January numbers were 875. The numbers for these 2 months is a 14% increase compared to January and February of 2008.

We had heard that many lenders across the nation had been holding off on foreclosure filings, waiting to see what the government bailouts would bring. They were also hoping to try to work directly with homeowners on loan modifications or special payment plans.

The government is hoping to reduce the number of foreclosures going on the market, as the large inventory tends to drive home prices down.

A homeowner must usually be at least 3 months behind on their mortgage payments for them to receive a foreclosure notice.  Not all foreclosure notices that are mailed out turn into homes that go actually go into foreclosure.  An owner can work with their lender to see if they can work out a plan to avoid the foreclosure.

Mardi Gras in Cocoa Village this Weekend

This weekend Cocoa Village in Brevard County will host the Mardi Gras.

There will be a street party tonight and a parade with floats.  The fun begins at 5:00tonight.  There will be bands , food and lots of drinks.

There will be a beauty pageant for kids.

This year they have tried to make the event more 'children' friendly than in years past.  There will be pet rescue groups, the Humane Society will be there and there will be street vendors, THis year there will be carnival rides.

days of amusements. The addition of a carnival and daytime activities cater to kids and families, while the street party, which goes on late into the evening, is more for adults.

Dogs are welcomes, on leashes of course and they can participate in a costume parade.

There will also be a special masquerade party for $18 in advance.  Tickets can be purchased at the Cocoa Civic.

Now, I'm sure that our Mardi Gras will pale in comparison to the real Mardi Gras in that John Walters' told us about in Louisiana.

But, I think it will be a great time for all.

Bring Your Kleenex Box With You this Weekend

bring your box of kleenexAre you starting to feel those scratchy eyes, itchy throat and runny nose?  Well there's a good reason for it. We are hearing that the pollen count here in Brevard County currently is quite high. This is not that uncommon from February to April in our area.

Tomorrow oak and grass counts will be at their highest level on the the pollen scale.

Currently the level is at 8.6 on a scale of 0 to 12 with 12 being the highest.  Sunday it will reach 10.8 according to the Allergy and Asthma Center of East Orlando.

We breathe pollen into our lungs, where it then enters out bloodstream.  There it causes histamine and gives many people much difficulty in breathing.

So, bring that tissue box with you this weekend and be sure to take an extra allergy tablet before you head out for the day (check with your doctor first).

Take the Positive and Move Forward

take the positive and move forward You know we're all getting older and sometimes I feel like I'm getting busier than ever before.  Being busy is good. It gives us a sense of accomplishment and it helps measure our success.  We set our goals and then reach for the stars to rise to the occasion.

Life is such a hustle and bustle all day, everyday.  I wake up  on Monday morning and when I lie my head on the pillow it's Friday night.  Time flies that quickly.

We run all over town taking our kids/teenagers all over the place...dance practice, play practice, spanish practice, powerlifting, to see their friends, to go to the movies. the list never ends.

But as of late, I wonder, how often do they sit down for a minute?  And breathe?

Do you ever think, how often do you sit down for a minute? And breathe?

No, I mean, really take a deep breath and look around and enjoy the day, the weather, anything?

On Tuesday we brought home the ashes of my husband's recently deceased mother.  She will be laid to rest when my brother in law comes back to town in a couple of weeks. It was emotional at first to see the urn. But. it has been comforting as the week has progressed. We keep her close. But what really struck me is that she is finally at peace. She is resting. She was a go getter and never ever stopped. But, she was forced to slow down and even stop.

Did she get to do all the things she had hoped to do in her life? Did she say all the things to all the people that she wanted to say before she passed? We'll never know.  We know we didn't get to say everything to her that we had hoped to.

Her passing has brought my husband of 20 years and myself closer together.  We have begun doing more things together now.  We value and appreciate the life we have more, now. As it is so very precious.  We are making plans for the future of how we can sit back and relax and get back to the good ole family days.

The passing of a loved one can have a dramatic impact on your family, good or bad.  The feeling of loneliness will never go away.  In time, we must all take the positive and move forward.

It is our choice on how we choose to carry on. Do you deal with it or not?

You have to!

FOOTNOTE: I wrote this post thinking of my dear friends here on Active Rain, Mary Douglas and Ann Hayden, as they have lost loved ones recently.  I know both of them have been dealing with difficult times.  God bless both of them. They are both incredible people and I wouldn't know what to do without either one of them.

Springtime is My Favorite Time of Year

Springtime is My Favorite Time of Year

I love Springtime, when Daylight Savings Time begins. We we set our clocks forward and get an extra hour of daytime in the evenings.  Here in Florida it stays light right now until after 8:00 PM.  The days don't feel so short.  We often are able to get home now before dark. We get to spend more time enjoying the day and the weather in the evenings. When I don't have appointments I get to take the dog for a longer walk, go to the park, or just get outside and enjoy the perfect weather. There's a light breeze and no humidty.  I love it.

The birds are singing, the sky is blue, and everything just seems to be at peace.

Springtime is truly my favorite time of year.

As Laura Asked, Are we Getting Legitimate Feedback?

I just finished reading Laura Jefferson's post about an agent that recently showed one of her listings. Laura indicated that when she called the other agent for feedback the response was that the buyer was allergic to cats.  Well, the question was, Why had the buyer's agent not asked FIRST, before showing the property whether there were cats on the property?  Was the response that came from this agent legitimate?  I think not.

Well, the post struck a cord with me, as I was just in a similar situation.  I have a home listed for sale.  I have pictures in MLS of the living room, dining room, family room and master bedroom.  All of these rooms have carpeting on the floors and the pictures in the MLS show the carpeting.

I called the other agent for feedback on the property and the response I got was, "The buyer wants a home with wood floors throughout."

Hmmmm, now what did I miss here?

Okay, well she can put wood floors in.  No, she said. She wants them already there. Well, perhaps then, she should have shown a house with all wood floors??  And was that just a nice way to say, "no thank you?"

Tell me the real reason the buyer didn't like the house.

I Wish All Listings Were As Immaculate As This One

Two weeks ago I placed a beautiful home on the market here in Melbourne Florida.  It is a home priced at $123,400 that shows like a model.  Everything in it is immaculate.  And, the sellers have impeccable taste. They have put many upgrades into the home and it shows. There is no clutter anywhere.  Buyers walking through the home are quite impressed.

We received an offer the day after the house went on the market.  We had 5 additional showings that week, with the promise of an out of town offer coming in.  We received another offer on the property after 5 more showings and the home continues to be shown.

The owners have been a delight to deal with and the home has been a pleasure to have on the market.

I just wish I had 12 more homes, just like this one to sell.

I Wish All of My listings were like this one

The Lord Works in Mysterious Ways

the lord works in mysterious waysOn Friday I wrote a post about my mother in law passing on after a four year battle with lung cancer.  She was truly on borrowed time for the last two years and we feel blessed to have shared our lives with such a wonderful lady.

Her first Great Grandbaby was due on March 5, 2009, the day she died.  Everyday she asked, "Now what day is it now? When is that baby due?"

My husband was delayed in San Franscisco for an additional 24 hours in getting home from his business trip. He got off his late airplane, and had an appointment in 2 hours with the church for final arrangements and then he was ushered off to the funeral home to pay his final respects.  He was devastated when he saw his mother.

Her great grandbaby was still not born yet.

He had a relationship with his mother like no other mother and son that I've ever seen.  That was one of the qualities that attracted me to him when we first met. He was with her everyday that she was sick (up until her last week) and spent many nights with her. She let go when my husband left town. She was tired.  She didn't want to die when he was near, it would hurt him too much.

The last several days have been challenging to say the least...planning the funeral, going through her paperwork, beginning to clean out her home.  It has been a roller coaster ride of emotions from hour to hour.

The funeral was yesterday at 3:00 PM.  It was very difficult, as they always are.  It was a sad time for all.  We spent time with people that we love very much to remember the good old times.

The great grandbaby was still not born yet.

We got the call today at 4:30.

The baby was born today.  At 3:00 PM, exactly 24 hours after we said goodbye and had the funeral!

We are blessed at such an emotional time in our lives to have such a wonderful gift, a new baby girl, April, in the family. Instead of being sad for the loss of one life, it's time for all of us to shift our focus to a new beginning, a new life, new memories and new dreams.

The Lord truly does work in mysterious ways.
