Color is Fun, But Not Always When You're Selling

Color is Fun, But Not Always if You're Selling

Color is fun. Growing up I remember we didn't have colors on the walls of our home.  Our house was painted eggshell, which really isn't a color.  It's considered off white, but not quite as stark as white. As a kid, I remember always wanting a bedroom that was painted a "fun" color.

My 13 year old, Sam told me a couple of months ago that she ready for a change from her pink room  with fairies on the wallpaper border. I had to agree, that it was time for something a bit more sophisticated.  However, being the individual that she is I was waiting to hear what color was coming next.  She decided on red with black and white polka dots.  The red came as no surprise, as I know that's her favorite color.  I told her that I thought that the red would keep her up at night and give her nightmares. We laughed and opted for something a bit more subtle.

At the beginning of Spring Break I told Sam that if she wanted her room painted, she'd have to get right on it.  She and her sister have painted many a rental house with me, so she has no problem with prep work and painting.  She spent about 2 days from start to finish and did 85% of the work on her own.  Her room turned out beautifully.

We live in our homes and enjoy our own tastes and decorations.

As I look at Sam's newly painted violet blue room, which she loves, I am reminded that some of the colors in my home would not be suitable if I were going to sell. Some of the colors would be too bold and too personalized to appeal to the tastes of a broad range of buyers.

But, for now, I'll just sit back and enjoy the "fun" colors in my home.

Sandy.....enjoy your colors and your home.  I had a client tell me, after he spents months in the hospital recovering from an accident, that he would not look at homes with white/off white walls and no color.  A gallon of paint can go a long way to cover up the existing.....I VOTE COLOR

You have to paint and decorate for you, Sandy.  Not for anybody else.  But, when you decide to sell the house, will your daughter be there to help repaint the walls a more subdued tone?  By the way, I think it's quite a soothing color on the wall.  It's a good thing she listened to you about the red (with polka dots, no less)!

I am sure another teen will really enjoy the bold colors too. Personally I think they look great and fresh.

Sandy:

You bring up an interesting topic, and as a landlord, I have been experimenting with color instead of my antique white standby.  We have started painting our kitchens with a warm butternut color.  We have great comments.  Color can be trendy, so we will see how it goes!

Looks like a good paint job.  At least for the time being you can enjoy your home without having to sell it.

Sandy,

Yes, color is fine when you are living there but when you want to sell...;-)

Hi Sandy ~ In my market there is a strong preference for color over white walls.  But only for the "right" trendy colors.

Hi Sandy, I love the blue violet color that she picked out - color is fun...and I would die if I had to live in a home with white walls

Libby, Interesting that your client came out of the hospital insisting on color. The stark walls probably drove him crazy.

Joan, I was tickled to see her do it herself.

Sally, Sounds like your room takes you away to another country -bet it looks great.

Li, Never thought about it, but you could be right.

Sonny, Thanks for stopping by.

Heather, My girls help paint our rental houses and they're pretty quick too. I'll let you know is she helps when we go to sell (hahahahahahaha).

Ellie, I guess you're right, another teen would enjoy this fun room.

Charles, Good point, as landlords.  We have experimented with color too much, always go with the old standby eggshell and oyster.  I bet a butternut color would be beautiful.

Justin, We'll do just that- enjoy our fun colors.

Ann, This is the finished product - blue and everything matches beautifully.

Elizabeth, Interesting. I think you're right, trendy is key.

Bob and Carolin, This is the color she picked - the blue - violet.  It turned out nicely.

Hi Tony, White can be frightful. I guess you're a poet and don't know it.

Hey Miss Mary, Color is fun and I also love the color she picked. I would not have been able to live with red, black and white.

Hi SS,

I agree with you, a home needs color! My youngest daughter's room is baby blue and baby pink. Blue on the bottom half of the wall and pink on the top half. The two colors are separated by a princess border consisting of those two colors. Oddly enough, it's very pretty. However, I don't know if most people would think so, for the colors, at first look, are a little shocking.

PS...just crossed my mind (I don't know why)...if we were to team up, our business would be called TOSS Realty...lol

Hi TO, Sounds great. My girls love to have some color. And sometimes we just go along with what they like (except I'm glad that she and I ruled out the red with black dots).

Hey Ann, She really did a nice job, didn't she.  And Elmo is my favorite.
