Yesterday, the School Board of Brevard County approved a 25 cent tax increase, per $1000 of taxable value of a property. It was a unanimous decision. The board felt that this was a needed increase, as the district had an estimated $66 million deficit.
The increase computed on a $200,000 owner occupied home, with homestead exemption of $25,000 would amount to about $10.00 a year.
The increase will actually amount to about 4.8 cents per $1000 of taxable value on a property, when the state tax decrease is computed this year.
It is projected that the increase will raise about $8.4 million in revenue.

Sandy, My knee jerk reaction to this is oh crap more taxes. I find that 4.8 cents to be a bargain compared to what other agencies are considering. Schools are essential to our well being...
Hi Sandy, no one likes more taxes - we are already drowning in tax, it seems -- however $10.00 more per year to support the schools sounds reasonable - I don't mind supporting education.
Sandy, it is a blessing and a curse! Taxes will be with us until the styrofoam in landfills decompose!
Hey Miss Mary, I think it's important to support education for the sake of our kids. The $10.00 is a reasonable request - I agree. We'll just have to sit tight and see what else they come up with.
Caren, I think you're right - it can be both. We need the money for schools - but we'll be paying more taxes. We knew this would be the beginning of new taxes when we heard the school board was cutting $70 million out of the budget. I think you said it beautifully!
Raising property taxes for kids is great. They need to offset it by lowering taxes elsewhere.
Sandy - It's amazing they even got it approved with the record of Florida tax payers opposing just about everything. Canaveral Groves and Palm Bay are good examples.
Hi TOTO, It's important to be sure that our kids are getting the best education possible - and many of us are concerned about the budget cuts this year.
Hi John, It does seem amazing. I know some that aren't too happy about it.
Sandy - It certainly doesn't seem like an exorbitant amount. We are usually fortunate in getting most of our school bond measures passed. However, California has some pretty big budgetary problems going on currently, so that could change for awhile.
Hi Myrl, No, it really doesn't feel like a large amount, does it? We are going through some large budget cuts ourselves right now, and don't want that to effect the quality of education our children are getting.
Sandy I hate all taxes. These small taxes add up over time, and when things improve they never end these tax increases. They find something else to spend it on. No such thing as a temporary tax.
Hi John, I agree that there is no such thing as a temporary tax. These little taxes do add up over time.
