School Starts in Brevard County on August 10

Brevard County SchoolsWow, Summer break is almost over! Where did it go?

Brevard County students are headed back to school on August 10, two weeks earlier than students in other school districts.

Brevard, labeled a high academic district, with a letter grade A,  requested the early start date. The district wants to allow for additional time to prepare students for the FCAT exam, the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test taken by third through tenth grade students. Eleventh and twelfth graders take the SAT or ACT, college entrance exams.

The new schedule means that students in Brevard will get out 2 weeks earlier than other districts.

The district has also decided this year that midterm exams will be given BEFORE students go on Winter break, unlike last year, when students took them AFTER Winter break.  This put much unnecessary stress on students and families during their Winter vacations.

The school day will begin 15 minutes later, and get out 15 minutes later than last year.

Sandy, Our schools for the most part don't start till Labor day.We can get people into homes before schools starts. Sounds like a good plan anyway!

Hi Sandy-It doesn't seem possible that school is starting for the kids but I like their thinking on a number of things. Great post. Have a super week. :-)

Hi Sandy, I still think August is early, as I wrote that our schools will be starting soon, too.  Knowing the reasoning behind the decisions does make sense, though.  Hope your girls have a super year this year!

Paul, I know that the Northern schools all start before our do.  I like the idea that mid terms will be before the holiday break this year.

Hi Pat, I don't know where our summer has gone. But we have been so busy -it's great.

Hi Mary, August does seem early. But in alot of ways the girls are ready to go back to school.

My goodness, it seems we are sending kids back to school earlier and earlier each year!  I remember when they got out in the middle of June and returned mid-September.

Hi Myrl, It does seem earlier and earlier each year. But, it is my understanding they are still getting 180 days, no matter what the schedule looks like.

Sandy, Wow, school starts early there in Brevard County.  I believe the children return after Labor Day in early September here.  Good post to remind people of all that back to school shopping :)

Hi Sharon

The summer has gone by in a flash for the kids.

Good luck and success.

Sandy,

It sounds like a good idea to have the exams prior to the break.  Then the holiday can be enjoyed!

Carole, It is very early.  But, in some ways it's probably good, as the kids are ready to get back to a regular schedule.

Lou, It certainly has gone by quickly. As the years pass, it seems to go faster all the time.

Hi Ann, Last year it was awful when students took exams the week they came back from Winter Break.  Teachers, students and parents hated it.
