Space Shuttle Discovery Launch on May 31, 2008 - Brevard County Florida

Here in Brevard County we can stand in our front yards and watch the breathtaking shuttle and rocket launches. I haven't missed a single launch in the over 33 years that I have lived in Melbourne. Every single one is different than the last. The one common thread that they all have is that they are an absolutely incredible sight to see.

The next shuttle launch is scheduled for May 31, 2008 at 5:02 PM. The shuttle will take the largest piece of the Japanese space agency's Kibo lab to the space station. There it will be installed.

If you have never seen a space shuttle liftoff, you truly don't know what you are missing. Come and visit Cape Canaveral in Brevard County during a launch.  You will never forget the up close experience of seeing and feeling the shuttle liftoff.

Sandy, that is something we have always wanted to do.  I did see the shuttle re-entering one time at night going over Houston.  It was so cool to see.  Our concern is it gets delayed and we wouldn't be able to hang around for days waiting for it to go.

Marchel,

The re entry is incredible.

People come from many different countries to watch the shuttle liftoff.  It is a once in a lifetime experience for most. A delay is always a concern, and it does happen every once in a while.  Depending on what the delay is for (weather or slight malfunction) determines whether it will go the next day or is postponed indefintely. I always feel for those that travel so far to get here, and then it is scrubbed.

Be sure that when you come that you have other plans for your visit.  There is so much to do here. We have the cruise ships leaving Port Canaveral daily. And Cape Canaveral is about 40 minutes from Disney, Universal, Islands of Adventure and so many more theme parks.

The space shuttle liftoff is something you truly have to experience at least once!  Hope to see you here soon, someday! Best wishes!  Sandy

I have never seen a lift off.  I was there for one about 10-12 years ago but it was delayed.

Many people don't know that you can see the shuttle and space staion in orbit.  They are both visible with the naked eye.  Check out the NASA human spaceflight web site

It is truly something that everyone should see.  There are the lucky ones like Sandy and myself who live in this wonderful area.  I love watching the shuttle from my double decker dock.  My entire house shakes, the windows shake, the dog barks like crazy and if it's a night launch the sky is bright.  It's awesome!

Great Post Sandy!  It's funny, we watch the shuttle and rocket launches on a regular basis.  Sometimes we forget that what we see regularly others only can dream of seeing.

Thanks Bob for the info on the website.  I'll check it out.

Mitch, you are absolutely right!  We are spoiled, living here...we can just walk outside and watch the shuttle liftoff.  I have many friends that travel all the way from England just to see a launch.  They all have told me that the trip was absolutely worth it. Sandy
