I Have to Move! Your Rental House is Haunted!?

Okay, I have been a landlord here in Melbourne Florida located in Brevard County Florida since 1996.  GhostsOwning several rental properties, I have pretty much seen and heard it all, until last week!

My tenant here in Melbourne Florida called me to tell me that she needed to talk to my husband and me.  So, we took the time to go to see her.  Let me start by saying she is a very, very sweet lady.  I like her very much and she has been a great tenant.  She takes care of the property and pays her rent on time.

She said 'I have been afraid to tell you this because I was afraid you would think I am crazy!' I couldn't imagine what she had to tell us.

'Well, she continued, 'your house is haunted.  You have ghosts here!'

What did you say?

She went on to tell us that our rental house has had ghosts in it since December.

Haunted HouseIt started with Christmas tree ornaments flying off the tree, across the room.  Then, she said that pictures were flying off the walls, across the room.  She said she hears voices in the back bedroom, a man, woman and little boy named John. She said that the ghosts have grabbed her and her daughters by the back, by their hair, and yanked their heads back.

She said she and her daughters have been choked in their sleep at night, waking up, gasping for breath.

I sat and intently tried to take in the things she was trying to tell me.  I really didn't know what to think or how to react.  A haunted house?  This was just a plain ordinary house, in a plain ordinary area.  We have owned this house for 8 years, with 6 different tenants...in between tenants we have spent at least a month working in the house, getting it ready for the next tenant.  I had never heard voices or seen ghosts, and neither had any of our other tenants.

She went on to say that she had a professional company come in to determine if there were ghosts present in the house, and they also heard voices and said there were ghosts in the house.  She said that she has researched the land records to see if there was any previous history of the home being located on Ghostssome type of burial site and she found nothing.

She said her lease would be up in a couple of months and asked if she could shift to another one of our properties at the end of the lease. Judging by the seriousness in her eyes I told her I would shift her to another property, but I have nothing else currently available.

I talked to my broker, who has owned rental properties here in Melbourne Florida for over 45 years.  In his experience, he has never had a tenant tell him one of his houses is haunted.

Well, I have mulled over this situation several times, and I truly don't know what to make of it.

Have you ever had an experience with a haunted house?  Do they exist?

Wow!  It's apparent she is not trying to get out of a lease or doing anything wrong.  Yes I have heard of places that are haunted.  At a resort about an hour from me is an old hotel that has a history of being haunted.  They tell their guest to keep their laptops in the car because the ghost don't like the silver books.  They have had furniture moved against a door from the inside with that being the only door.  You explain it!  My college had a picture of a ghost at old main, truely it was for real.  You explain it.

Hi Dick, No, she has not indicated in any way that she is trying to get out of her lease.  She is a dear lady and seems quite sincere.  I have heard of haunted houses also, but not one of my own!  I know that some people are also much more sensitive to seeing and channeling spirits than others.  I have spent considerable time in this home myself, working on it, painting and repairing, as recently as last August, and saw and heard nothing. It's intriguing to me.

Well, my GF had experience in a haunted house. I told her to talk to them and tell them they weren't going to hurt them. They could all share the house.

She did a little research of the house and there were a multi-family murder. I gather they were not at rest. But some haunted houses occur when the occupants come home to their first home to rest...and wander around for a bit.

I find it facinating, but then again, I am not leaving with them....

Hi Nancy, Really,,,so how do it finally work out with your girlfriend? A multi family murder?  Oh my gosh,..that's horrible.  Did they finally leave her alone? I think it is fascinating also, but I don't know, if they are restless spirits, I have heard some are not very nice at all!

places all over are haunted from bossiness to houses to lakes to woods to railroads and roads, anywhere somebody died violently or tragic or they like the place or don't know there dead or they don't want to go.what ever the case no place is out of the question. i run a paranormal group called prd (paranormal research division) IN my experience it seems you have one of two problems 1. a inhuman spirit or  2. a poltergeist. it would not hurt to try to get the place blessed but if it continues you will need to go to a Catholic church for help.

here is some info on inhuman and poltergeist

inhuman spirits:

The third type of haunting, and undoubtedly the most frightening, is a demonic, or inhuman, haunting. In this case, the entity is similar to a traditional haunting because the spirit is intelligent and is existing in the present moment with you. Unfortunately, the emotion that is tying them to the earthly realm is usually anger. These spirits are malevolent and hostile, suffering from psychological instability or distress stemming from an unresolved conflict with the people who are being subjected to the demonic activity. Demonic presences tend to be ‘unleashed' in order for them to manifest. This is one reason why the use of a Ouija Board is customarily discouraged among many ghost hunters

. As Carl Johnson of The Atlantic Paranormal Society (TAPS) put it, "...while some of these devices may at first appear to be utterly harmless and regarded as tools to aid in tapping into one's subconsciousness, the results can be likened to leaving open one's back door in a country setting. Now, you may only have some little squirrels and chipmunks wander into your kitchen, but odds are that eventually you'll find yourself facing down a bear, maybe a small cub, IF YOU'RE LUCKY. And keep in mind, where there's one "bear," others are lurking somewhere close by!"

Poltergeist

This is a spirit, usually mischievous and occasionally malevolent, which manifests its presence by making noises, moving objects, and assaulting people and animals. The term "poltergeist" comes from the German poltern, "to knock," and geist, "spirit." Some cases of poltergeists that remain unexplained and may involve actual spirits. In other cases the phenomena may be produced by subconscious psychokinesis (PK) on the part of an individual.

Included in the most common types of poltergeist activities are the rains of stones, dirt, and other small objects; moving or throwing of objects, including large pieces of furniture; loud noises and shrieks; and vile smells. It seems that poltergeists have adapted to the development of technology. They are known to have caused interference in telephones and electronic equipment, and turning lights and appliances on and off. Some poltergeists are said to pinch, bite, hit, and sexually attack the living.

Generally poltergeist activity starts and stops abruptly. The duration of it may extend over several hours to several months; however, some cases have been reported to last over several years. The activity almost always occurs at night when someone is presence. Typically this is the "agent," an individual who seems to serve as a focus or magnet for the activity. In most cases the agent is a factor, both those that seem paranormal or that may be caused by human PK. The agent is usually female and under the age of twenty.

Poltergeist disturbances have occurred globally since ancient times. In the late 1970s parapsychologists Alan Gauld and A. D. Cornell did a computer analysis of those cases collected since 1800 to that time. They identified sixty-three general characteristics, which include the following: 64 percent involved the movement of small objects; 58 percent were most active at night; 48 percent featured raps; 36 percent involved movement of large objects; 24 percent lasted longer than one year; 16 percent featured communication between the poltergeist and agent; 12 percent involved the opening and shutting of doors and windows.

Before the 19th century, poltergeist activity was blamed on the Devil, demons, witches, and ghosts of the dead. The Gauld-Cornell analysis found only 9 percent of the cases attributed to demons, 7 percent to witches, and 2 percent to spirits of the dead. Most of the demon and witches attributions occurred in non-Western countries. Poltergeist activity at séances was attributed to spirits of the dead.

The development and increase of psychical research during the late 19th and early 20th centuries helped confirm the conviction that poltergeist activity was genuine. Among the early investigators were two founders of the Society for Psychical Research, Sir William Barrett and Fredric W. H. Meyers. Meyers believed in the genuineness of poltergeist activity and that it was distinguishable from ghost hauntings.

In the 1930s the psychologist and parapsychologist Nandor Fodor advanced the theory that some poltergeist disturbances were caused not by spirits but by human agents suffering from intense repressed anger, hostility, and sexual tension. Fodor successfully demonstrated his theory in several cases, including the most famous "Thormton Heath Poltergeist" in England, which he investigated in 1938. The case involved a woman whose repressions caused a poltergeist outbreak and apparently a vampire attack. The Spiritualists severely criticized Fodor, but he won a libel suit against a Spiritualist newspaper.

William Roll, project director of the Psychical Research Foundation in Durham, North Carolina, further explored this psychological dysfunction theory. Starting in the 1960s, Roll studied 116 written reports of poltergeist cases spanning over four centuries in more one hundred countries. Roll identified patterns that he labeled "recurrent spontaneous psychokinesis" (RSPK), which are inexplicable, spontaneous physical effects. Generally, he discovered, the most common agent was a child or teenager whose unwitting PK was a way of expressing hostility without the fear of punishment. The individual was not aware of being the cause of such disturbances, but was, at the same time, secretly or openly please that they occurred.

Other investigators have also investigated agents finding that those in poor mental and physical health are vulnerable to stress. Patient having unresolved emotional tensions have been associated with houses where poltergeist activity occurred. When studying the personalities of agents psychologists found anxiety reactions, conversion hysteria, phobias, mania, obsessions, dissociative reactions, and schizophrenia. In some cases therapy eliminated the poltergeist activity.

However, the psychological dysfunction theory has been disputed by other researchers, including Gauld and Cornell who said the psychological tests employed were invalid. Psychiatrist Ian Stevenson proposed that spirits of the dead may account for more poltergeist activity than realized. In his study of a number of cases attributed to agents and to spirits of the dead, Stevenson noted significance differences. The phenomena in living agent cases was without purpose and often violent, while cases involving spirits of the dead featured intelligent communication, purposeful movement of objects, and little violence.

Poltergeist activities have been reported in many countries, and chronicled by occult writers such as A. R. G. Owen and Colin Wilson. The Epworth Poltergeist case is one of the best-documented cases of poltergeist activity. A.G.H.

I had a similar problem with a rental property in Satellite Beach. It wasn't quite as bad as your tennant had described, but there were voices, movement of objects, the TV and stereo would change channels, and one time we saw a "shadow figure" in the hallway. This experience led me to create a paranormal research team.

If you have any more problems with the property, or want us to come over there and attempt to document or disprove any activity, shoot us an email.
