Manatee Crossing in the Indian River Lagoon

Here in Melbourne Florida we are known for our manatees, or sea cows that swim and leisurely play in the Indian River Lagoon.

I love traveling 10 minutes to the river to see if we can spot a manatee or two, on a beautiful summer afternoon.

Manatees look somewhat similar to a seal. They have a thin layer of hair on their body to help reduce Manatees can be found in Indian River Lagoonbuild up of algae on their skin.

Manatees like the Indian River Lagoon because of it's shallow muddy waters.  They enjoy Florida, because of the tropical climate.  They have a very low metabolic rate, with very little internal body fat, thus the warm water temperatures.  Some can be found as far north as Louisiana and Virginia in the summer months. They like water 3 to 5 meters deep.

We typically get lucky enough to see the manatees. Although, we patiently waited to catch a glimpse of the gentle giants, but unfortunately we didn't see one today,

But, here is a picture of 2 manatees that are similar to the ones we find here in the Indian River Lagoon in Brevard County Florida.

Manatees and other marine animals are fun to watch. We saw a group of Manatees moving down the coast along the beach last week. They were swimming in and around the people in the water.

Hi Sandy,

I LOVE MANATEES, they are like "Gentle Elephants of the SEA" or "Gentle Giants" and when we lived in Crystal River, we would go the visit the Manatees at the local nature park.  They were always eating lettuce that they had in the water.  We will aloud to touch the Manatees, and it felt like watery leather. MY GIRLS AND I LOVED GOING TO THE PARK....   ;>)

Sean, WoW! How neat for you to see them swimming near the people in the water!  Manatees are fascinating to watch. Thanks for sharing!

Ann Marie, Manatees are mesmerizing. They get up close and personal and don't seem to be afraid of people.  They appear highly intelligent.  Do you ever get to see them anymore? I LOVE YOUR PICTURE!  IT'S BEAUTIFUL!  Did you take it?  You should blow it up and put it in a frame on a wall somewhere!  INCREDIBLE!  Thank you so much for sending the picture!

Sandy, we've spent time in Crystal River and went to Homosassas Springs to see the manatees. My husband and daughter even swam with them, so incredible. Great photos.

Hi Debbie, Ann Marie Clements mentioned in her comment that she lived in Crystal River and she and her family visited the local nature park all the time to see the manatees, and they were beatiful!  Did you see the picture she attached?  It is so incredible! So you and your family got to swim with them?  Oh my goodness, that must have been a real treat!  We will have to check in to doing that - it would be great.  Thank you so much for sharing!
