Realtors - How Many Different Hats Do you Wear?

Realtors-How many different hats do you wearWhen I was a 13 year old girl, I remember having the dream of being "in" the real estate business. I wanted to help buyers and sellers with their real estate transactions. I always thought what an easy and fun job!  Wow!

I had a great uncle that began buying and selling vacant land in the 1960's in Melbourne Beach Florida. He also had his real estate license. It seemed that everything he touched turned to gold.  He had a knack for the business.  As I watched him, I remember thinking that when I grow up, I was going to do just what he did...buy and sell real estate, also.

He made it all look so easy, and then I got into the business 13 years ago, and found out that it was NOT easy at all!

It was a lot of hard work and constant dedication!

The job of being a realtor is an ever-evolving career.  A great Realtor is continually learning and growing, everyday. We must stay abreast of the current local and national markets.  We must continually educate ourselves, as the market is continually adjusting.  We must adjust with it.  If we don't, we'll be dead in the water!

In order to be an effective agent and be able to successfully look out for the best interests of our buyers, sellers and investors we must wear many hats.

A great Realtor must be knowledgeable in so many different fields

We must:

Understand the Economy and market trends

Know and understand building codes

Be knowledgeable in home construction

Understand home inspection issues

Be informed about community events

Have a keen eye in interior design

Be good in Math

Be a great listener

Be able to read between the lines

Be an effective speaker

Be a great motivator

Be an effective negotiator

Be firm and be able to say No

Be a great diplomat

Be ethical

Be a self starter

Be driven to succeed

Be organized

Be a good planner

Be a great party planner

Be a good map reader and know areas of our towns inside and out

Be an effective writer

Be a good salesperson

Be an internet specialist

Be well respected and liked within our community

Be a cheerleader

Be a psychologist

Understand finance and loan programs

Be good in Marketing

Be a great photographer

Be a great filmmaker

This list could go on and on.

Everday in the real estate business I learn something new. No two transactions are ever the same. That's what I love about the business!

As a REALTOR, how many different hats do you wear?

I wear a number of hats and they all seem to intertwine with Real Estate so this is good.

Hi Sandy,

You are right on! One more hat in today's market is, "House Sitter" Not that we like it, but when one of our listings is a vacant home our responsibility includes making sure it is up to par for showing at all times. We make our rounds at least once a week so the property never looks abandon or neglected.

Now, those are a lot of hats Sandy. Some of them are even bigger than the one Aretha wore at the inauguration.

Sandy,

So many hats...so little time!

Our list grows and grows as the industry changes.

Thanks for posting,

Ann

PS Did you miss me?  I was without internet while I was at the state meetings.

I'm always surprised by some of the off the wall questions clients sometime ask me.  Like what is the student to teacher ratio in this school district.  The process of learning is really never ending in real estate.  You never know what your clients will ask you next.

Hi Steven, We wear so many hats, often times we forget just how many there are!

Hi Mott, Great addition to the list!

Hi Miss Mary, I think you're right, we would need a whole room for all the hats we wear!

Hi Allen, I agree, it's the part of the business that I like too!

Hi Hal, So true, another great addition to the list!

Hi Fred, Great point, some of the hats we wear are bigger than others!

Hi Ann, Love the point - our list of hats does grow as the industry changes!

Hi Lou, Multi tasking is key in real estate - isn't it?

Hi Justin, We do get asked lots and lots of questions, that sometimes we don't always know the answers. But we must know where to find them!

Hi Chris and Karen, More great additions to this endless list!

Great post Sandy. I have something similar on my web page about all the things Realtors have to do, and all the things Home Stagers have to do. I may have to add some of your items to both my lists..."know when to say no"...is a great one!

Hi Ann, Well I hope that you stay warm.  We had a little cold snap here, but I'd have to say that it has still been getting up in the 70's during the day!

Hi Nora, I hope that you are doing well and I hope that business has picked up for you as it has for many others of us here in Melbourne.  I think this list could go on and on, don't you?

There are times when I wonder when real estate became a computer job... this is probably one of the bigger challenges that the modern agent faces- the technology aspect.

Posted by Chuck Willman, Arizona Realtor® 480.292.0600 (Gentry Realty) about 3 years ago

Hi Chuck, Another great addition to the list  - a technology expert .  I agree, often times the computer aspect of the job is one of the most difficult.
